    What is Trigger Point?

    Trigger points, also known as trigger sites or muscle knots, are described as a specific point on the body at which touch or pressure can cause pain.

    Unexplained pain frequently radiates from these points of local tenderness to broader areas, sometimes distant from the trigger point itself.

    There are differing views to  explain how Trigger Points form and what pain they produce.

    Pressing on a  trigger point may cause tenderness, referred pain, or local twitch response. The local twitch response only involves a small twitch, no contraction.


    Trigger Point has the following characteristics:

    • Pain related to a specific spot in the muscle, not caused by a blow to the region, inflammation, degeneration, or infection.
    • The painful point feels like a nodule or band in the muscle, and when pressure is applied to the knot a twitch response happens.
    • Palpation of the trigger point reproduces the patient's complaint of pain, and the pain radiates in a distribution typical of the specific muscle harboring the trigger point.

    Six Hundred and twenty (620) potential trigger points are possible in human body. When the trigger points become active, they show up in the same muscles in every person. A trigger point map can be made that is accurate for any human.

    An active trigger point is one that actively refers pain either locally or to another location.  A latent trigger point is one that exists, but only transfers pain actively when pressure is applied to the muscle.


    Potential Causes of Trigger Points


    Trigger Points may be activated by a number of factors, including muscle overload, inflammation, disease, direct trauma , accident trauma (such as a car accident ) plus health issues.

    Trigger points form only in muscles.

    They form as a local contraction in a small number of muscle fibers in a larger muscle or muscle bundle. These in turn can pull on tendons and ligaments associated with the muscle and can cause pain deep within a joint where there are no muscles.

    When trigger points are present in muscles there is often pain and weakness in the associated structures.


    Treatment

    Therapists may use deep pressure massage and stretching techniques to relieve the pain associated with Trigger Points.

    Hands, elbows, feet or various tools are used to apply direct pressure on the trigger point. A successful treatment protocol identifies and removes trigger points. Then the surrounding muscles are then stretched to resolve the strain patterns.

    Fascia surrounding muscles should also be treated to elongate and resolve strain patterns. 

    Pain is also common after a Trigger Point Massage.  The resultant pain should be temporary.

    Drink plenty of water to release the toxins built up in the affected muscles.
