    What is Shoulder Pain?

Shoulder pain is one of the more common reasons for physician visits for musculoskeletal symptoms. The shoulder is the most movable joint in the body. However, it is an unstable joint because of the range of motion allowed. This instability increases the likelihood of joint injury, often leading to a degenerative process in which tissues break down and no longer function well.

This process can be ceased by proper intervention.

    What causes Shoulder Pain?

The shoulder is a ball and socket joint with a large range of movement. Such a mobile joint tends to be more susceptible to injury. Shoulder pain can stem from one or more of the following causes:

    Strains from overexertion
    Tendonitis from overuse
    Shoulder joint instability
Collar or upper arm bone fractures
    Frozen shoulder
    Pinched nerves (also called radiculopathy)

Symptoms include a dull ache deep in the shoulder joint, trouble sleeping due to the instability and discomfort, and extreme weakness in overhead activities

Your doctor of chiropractic will ask questions about your symptoms. She may ask about any injuries, illnesses, or activities that may be causing your shoulder pain pain. You’ll be asked to describe your pain and to explain when the pain began, how often you have the pain and what activities lessen or intensify the pain.

Your doctor of chiropractic will also do a variety of examinations. During these exams she will test your range of motion and decipher the extent of inflamation. She will look for tenderness or numbness, tingling, or weakness in your arms or hands.

Finally the doctor will arrive at a diagnosis and treatment will begin that first visit.

Each case of shoulder pain is different.A chiropractic treatment plan may cover several different treatment methods, including but not limited to:

    • spinal adjustments,
    • ice/heat therapy,
    • TENS or electric stimulation,
    • soft tissue or manual therapy,
    • Kinesiotaping and rehabilitative exercises.

Chiropractic offers a non-invasive (non-surgical), drug-free treatment option. The goal of chiropractic care is to restore movement, thereby improving function while decreasing pain and inflammation.

Why multiple visits? This can be compared to working out.  If you don't exercise for a long time, your body is out of shape and it takes several trips to the gym to get in shape and build up your strength and endurance. Similarly, if you have never been adjusted, and do not practice proper health, it takes a few visits to put your body back in alignment.
