PREGNANCY aSSOCIATED bACK pAIN
At some point in pregnancy between morning sickness and labor pains, you may experience another unwelcome aspect of being pregnant -- back pain
Between 50% and 70% of expectant mothers experience back pain.
Often it begins in the second half of pregnancy as changes in your body weight and center of gravity put added strain on your spine.
There are many possible reasons pregnant women may experience back or spinal pain.
Here are some of the more likely causes:
- Weight gain
- Changes in your posture
- Hormone changes
- Muscle separation
- Emotional stress
Chiropractic care during pregnancy has been shown to significantly reduce the length of time a woman labors.
First time moms averaged a 24 percent shorter labor, while mothers who have already given birth experienced a 39 reduction reduction in the average labor length, compared to controls (Fallon, 1991). Chiropractic adjustments during pregnancy can also reduce the likelihood of experiencing back labor (Diakow, 1991).
Regular chiropractic adjustments can safely continue up until the time of birth (Penna, 1989).
Back pain in pregnancy -- often experienced as dull, persistent aches in the lower back -- tends to affect younger women and those who have had multiple pregnancies or weak backs before pregnancy.
For most women, pain occurs in the sacroiliac joint -- where the pelvis attaches to the spine. It may begin as stiffness in the morning and then progress to soreness through the day.
Your doctor of chiropractic will begin by taking a complete patient history.
You’ll be asked to describe your pain and to explain when the pain began, how often you have the pain and what activities lessen or intensify the pain.
In addition to the full chiropractic, orthopedic and neurological examination performed with all patients, special care is taken with:
- Close observation of any postural changes
- Any changes/difficulties walking
- Changes to the ribcage to accommodate the ‘bump’
- Soft tissue changes
- Any changes to blood pressure
- Generalized or localized edema /swelling
- Special emphasis given to the area of complaint
Chiropractors are in a unique position to determine special postural influences and muscle imbalances in each case, and to attend to the individual stressors with each visit. Unlike other conditions, X-rays are never taken of pregnant women.
Finally the doctor will determine a treatment plan and treatment will begin that first visit.
For most people, lower back pain responds very well to conservative care, especially chiropractic.
Keeping in mind that lower back pain is a symptom and not a stand-alone medical condition, treatment plans will often vary depending on the underlying cause of the problem. Chiropractic offers a non-invasive (non-surgical), drug-free treatment option.
The goal of chiropractic care is to restore spinal movement, thereby improving function while decreasing pain and inflammation.
A chiropractic treatment plan may cover several different treatment methods, including but not limited to spinal adjustments, ice/heat therapy, soft tissue or manual therapy, traction, Kinesiotaping and stretching exercises.
During the course of the pregnancy and after delivery, the patient will need to be treated multiple times. The doctor will explain your treatment plan at the second visit. Additionally, as the mother's body changes, treatment modalities will be modified for the mother's and baby's comfort.
Why multiple visits?
Because as the baby grows, the mother's body continues to grow and change, requiring additional visits to put your body back in alignment and proper posture.
