Migraines are severe, painful headaches that is often preceded or accompanied by sensory warning signs such as flashes of light, blind spots, tingling in the arms and legs, nausea, vomiting, and increased sensitivity to light and sound.
The excruciating pain that migraines bring can last for hours or even days.
Migraine headaches result from a combination of blood vessel enlargement and the release of chemicals from nerve fibers that coil around these blood vessels.
During the headache, an artery enlarges that is located on the outside of the skull just under the skin of the temple (temporal artery).
This causes a release of chemicals that cause inflammation, pain, and further enlargement of the artery.
Typical symptoms for migraines are:
- •Moderate to severe pain, usually confined to one side of the head, but switching in successive migraines
- •Pulsing and throbbing head pain
- •Increasing pain during physical activity
- •Inability to perform regular activities due to pain
- •Increased sensitivity to light and sound
Some people experience migraines with auras just before or during the head pain, but most do not. Auras are perceptual disturbances such as confusing thoughts or experiences and the perception of strange lights, sparkling or flashing lights, lines in the visual field, blind spots, pins and needles in an arm or leg, or unpleasant smells.
Your doctor of chiropractic will begin by taking a complete patient history. You’ll be asked to describe your pain and to explain when the pain began, how often you have the pain and what activities lessen or intensify the pain.
Forming a diagnosis will also require a physical and neurological exam, in which the doctor will pay special attention to your spine. You may be asked to perform some basic activities that will test your sensory and muscle strength, as well as your ranges of motion. X-rays may be taken of your neck.
Finally the doctor will arrive at a diagnosis and treatment will begin that first visit.
For most people, migraines respond very well to conservative care, especially chiropractic. Keeping in mind that migraine pain can be related to other medical conditions, treatment plans will often vary depending on the underlying cause of the problem. Chiropractic offers a non-invasive (non-surgical), drug-free treatment option.
The goal of chiropractic care is to improve spinal function and alleviate stress on your system.
A chiropractic treatment plan may cover several different treatment methods, including but not limited to spinal adjustments, ice/heat therapy, TENS or electric stimulation, soft tissue or manual therapy, traction and Kinesiotaping.
In some instances, nutritional advice is provided, along with advice on posture, ergonomics (work posture), exercise and relaxation techniques. This advice should help relieve the recurring joint irritation and tension in the muscles of the neck and upper back.
Depending on the severity of the condition, the patient will need to be treated multiple times. The doctor will explain your treatment plan at the second visit.
Why multiple visits? This can be compared to working out. If you don't exercise for a long time, your body is out of shape and it takes several trips to the gym to get in shape and build up your strength and endurance. Similarly, if you have never been adjusted, and do not practice good back health, it takes a few visits to put your body back in alignment and proper posture and relieve your headaches.
